If it is a small spot of urine – or a single time mistake – blot as much urine up as you can with towels. Then take a wet towel, using cold water, and scrub the spot a bit with enough water to dilute the urine.

Take dry towels and blot as much liquid up as possible again. Then do a milder vinegar/water step – dampen with vinegar water, blot up until it is as dry as you can get it. The vinegar is a natural deodorant for urine, and it also tends to discourage animals from using that spot to urinate in.

I use Nature’s Miracle as a last resort – but I stick with the wash/rinse/dry pattern. That wet towel / dry towel bit is all about that. • Step 1: Create a vinegar cleaning solution consisting of one part white vinegar to one part water. Vinegar neutralizes the ammonia smell of urine without fading carpet fibers, making it a good choice for cleaning and protecting your carpet.
  • Step 2: Slowly pour the solution on the stained area of the carpet. The solution needs to reach the lower fibers in the carpet to completely neutralize the area.
  • Step 3: After allowing the carpet to absorb the solution for 10 minutes, use a layer of paper towels to soak up the liquid.
  • Step 4: Once the carpet is almost dry — which could be several hours later — sprinkle a little baking soda on the area to absorb the odor. Allow the baking soda to settle into the carpet fibers for about 15 minutes, then vacuum the area.

After you’ve removed as much waste and absorbed as much fluid as possible from the affected area, I’ve found that club soda works quite well to bring up stains from pets. Simply pour club soda on the carpet stains, allow it to sit for about 10 minutes, then blot gently with a clean cotton rag. Repeat the process until the stain is gone!
